How you can help PWC

As a not-for-profit, volunteer-based agency, People Who Care depends to a large extent on the physical and financial help it receives from members of the public and the corporate sector. There are many ways in which you can help PWC to provide vital services to the community; here’s what you can do.

Become a Volunteer

Being able to help others with no thought of remuneration or financial gain is a special gift that lifts the spirits and gladdens the hearts of both giver and receiver. Volunteering is fun and it’s a wonderful way to meet people, make friends and keep yourself active.

People Who Care depends on volunteers for its very existence. They are at the very core of everything we do. We are constantly on the lookout to recruit community-minded people who are prepared to give a little time, skill or expertise to help those less fortunate than themselves.

Approximately 43% of our volunteers are female and 57% male. Our diverse volunteer base comes from a range of trades and professions. Many volunteers are retirees. 30% come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and a further 10% speak a second language. 1% of our volunteers are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

People Who Care believes that it has developed a framework of formal volunteering that connects our agency, volunteers and clients to the local community. Each of our volunteers has a designated position in which they know their set duties and hours, although these are usually flexible. Our well defined volunteer policies and procedures are supported by a volunteer coordinator whose role it is to recruit, manage, train and support volunteers.

While there are currently more than 350 volunteers registered with PWC, we always need more. Here are three ways you can become a PWC ‘vollie.’

Individual

In recent years we have had volunteer as young as 17 and as old as 92. Virtually anyone can become a volunteer although, if you intend to provide gardening and home maintenance services, you will need a certain level of fitness. If you volunteer as a driver and use your own vehicle, you will be recompensed at a rate based on kilometers driven and the engine capacity of your vehicle.

Youth

PWC is eager to attract young people as volunteers and has a special understanding with a number of Perth metropolitan schools including Guildford Grammar, Morley High, Hampton Senior High, Swan Christian College, Mandurah Senior High, Greenwood Senior High and Carine Senior High. Students and young people attending any school, college, TAFE, university, youth organisation or cadet group can volunteer as a team or as individuals.

Corporate

People Who Care also calls upon the corporate sector for specific volunteer days. This allows various companies to participate in activities that help to improve team building, staff morale, leadership skills and to attract quality staff while proving they are good corporate citizens who care about the communities in which they work.

If you would like to consider becoming a PWC volunteer, either register via our online registration form or contact us and ask to speak to Volunteer Coordinator in our Guildford or Mandurah office by contacting People Who Care directly or visit our Downloads area to download the appropriate information sheet.
